Laser tattoo removal uses Q-switched laser energy to shatter tattoo ink particles into microscopic fragments that the body’s lymphatic system can naturally eliminate. At Devenir Aesthetics, we use advanced laser technology capable of targeting multiple ink colors — including the blue, green, and teal pigments that older lasers struggled to address.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
Different wavelengths of laser light are selectively absorbed by different ink colors. The laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy that heat and fragment the ink particles without damaging surrounding tissue. Over the 6–8 weeks following each session, your immune system clears the fragmented ink — causing the tattoo to fade progressively with each treatment.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
Most tattoos require 6–12 sessions for significant fading or complete removal. The number depends on ink density, colors, age of the tattoo, placement, and your skin’s immune response. Amateur tattoos (often lighter and shallower) typically respond faster than professional tattoos. We use the Kirby-Desai scale at your consultation to estimate the number of sessions for your specific tattoo.
Does It Hurt?
Laser tattoo removal is often described as feeling like a rubber band snap against the skin — similar to getting the tattoo, but in shorter bursts. Topical numbing cream significantly reduces discomfort, and a cooling device is used during treatment. Sessions are typically quick (15–30 minutes for smaller tattoos) which limits overall discomfort.
After Treatment
The treated area may appear white immediately after (frosting — a normal reaction). Redness, swelling, and occasionally blistering are common in the days following. Keep the area clean, apply provided aftercare, and avoid sun exposure. Complete healing between sessions is essential — rushing sessions reduces effectiveness and increases risk of scarring.
